Move Over Facebook, Diaspora Is Moving In
If you like Facebook but hate the privacy issues, you will now have a choice. Diaspora is coming to the web and should prove to be a happy place for all who join. They chose to make their system an open-source one, which usually means success. The catch ? ? You need to use it. Read on for more information on the new alternative to Facebook called Diaspora.
Diaspora has first and foremost told the world that their upcoming system is simple. No jumping through countless lists of questions. No making lists. Simple concentrated sharing in a contextual way. Users decide without having to decide what information goes to what group of people. How is that done ? That part is not yet revealed. Nevertheless, it will not be something that makes you scratch your head and say; ” Wow, what do I want to do here ? “. Think of the word “intuitive” and you will be on the right track.
Next month is the beginning of the Diaspora project. This will be the month that the software that is Diaspora will be released for other programmers to work on. This could end up being one for the history books. At the very least it will be one for the mobile technology history books.
The word Diaspora means; “the spreading out of a group of people”. This should be the one thing that happens when this software is released. People will begin to use it to meet others and to share with them. They will use the Diaspora to do this. Facebook took off and now has around 500 million users. Diaspora is just starting out next month. It will be interesting to see how fast they grow.
One interesting thing to note about those who have contributed in the past to Diaspora is that they may be from Facebook. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is rumored to have donated to the Diaspora project. Does this make him an investor or just someone who came alongside to help ? ? If the four New York University students who originally created Diaspora received money from the top social site in the world, it makes this story powerfully interesting.
The rise of Diaspora is going to be irresistible and inevitable. The privacy problems that Facebook has will not be seen on the Diaspora software. Even more, the software is free to receive and actually becomes yours. Is Facebook yours ? Not even close. The whole network, your network, is personally controlled by you and all the others who use it. Therefore, all that happens are those things that Diaspora users want to happen. There is no “hub” like Facebook has. A message goes to those you want it to without any middle man. The makers of Diaspora say clearly that “sharing is a human value”.
Facebook presents a network where privacy and sharing are mutually exclusive. This is the opposite of the thoughts behind Diaspora. Your node will be your node. Your communications will be encrypted. The word encrypted means coded so that no one can read them but those who have the key.
Look for Diaspora to launch next month on the 15th. After that day you will be able to make your own social network without having to worry about others ruining your privacy.
