Motorola does not just put out great big powerful smartphones. Sometimes they make smaller ones for the rest of us. The Motorola Chindi is one for the “smaller smartphone” crowd. Read on to find out some of the details and when this model may be released.

If you are web-savvy you know that the Motorola Chindi may not end up being called a “Chindi” when it comes to market. What in the world is a Chindi anyway ? If you look it up, it is supposedly the departed spirit of a Navajo indian. Nevertheless, this is a Motorola product on the unique, even novel side of the mobile spectrum. It bears some resemblance to another not-so-popular model from Motorola, the Flipout.

The size on the Motorola Chindi is going to be similar to the Flipout. The screen on that model was 7.1 centimeters in size. That is 2.8 inches for readers from the United States. This is going to fit ridiculously easy into a pocket.

The inside of the Motorola Chindi is expected to run Android version 2.1 at the very least. The whole world seems to know that version 2.2 is already out for Android, but not many smartphones have it yet. With the wait, you are still able to get pinch and zoom on the Chindi. Android now has over 130,000 applications ( apps ) for sale. This operating system is offered to many smartphone manufacturers for nothing, even without licensing fees, so look for it to soar in popularity. If you were wondering, the Froyo version ( 2.2 ) is around four times faster than the 2.1 Eclair version. The Motoblur interface may not be used on the Chindi, since Motorola is trying to move away from Motoblur.

What will the Motorola Chindi be able to hook up to ? No specific details are mentioned yet, so again, we look at the Flipout. Wi-Fi may be available as well as GPS. There is the social networking capabilities of Android on board, so some form of high speed internet access is going to be on the Chindi. The camera is going to be a 3.1 megapixel unit and likely have video. The camera has flash included.

One glance at the popout keyboard and you know this was made for the power texters of the world. It is a five row keyboard with a QWERTY setup. Numbers are on the top row. A small directional button is located on the lower left side. It appears that the keyboard also has a backlight. The aforementioned Flipout model opened by swiveling the screen away from the keyboard. The Chindi is manufactured with the keyboard sliding out vertically from under the screen. A small difference, but one that may make the Chindi last longer.

The Motorola Chindi ( or whatever it ends up being called ) is a colorful handset. The back is a metallic orange color. If it follows in the footsteps of the Flipout it will also come in berry colors. This is a welcome change from the usual “business black” that Motorola models display. Look for this to come out on the AT&T network around the end of the year.
