The news is getting hotter on the next edition of the Nexus One. It is not created by HTC, but by Samsung. Get a pre-release look at the features of the Samsung Nexus S here in this quick article.
The buzz is loud since the people at Best Buy put up, then took down, notice of a “Nexus S” available only through them this Holiday season. Since then people have actually had one in their hands ( engadget ). It looks amazingly boring. It has a totally blacked-out look. One hundred percent of the front of the smartphone is flat.
The back of the S has some personality to it. It is sloped down in the center from the edges. If looked at from the side, it is thinner in the middle than on the ends. It is rounded so as not to catch on anything if it is put into or taken out of a pocket.
The screen is a larger than the last Nexus One. The older one was 3.7 inches, and the new is four inches. Both use the brighter AMOLED type of screen. AMOLED uses less energy from the battery which can give a longer time between charges.
Expect the newer Nexus S display to have the normal acrobatics that makes an upper-level smartphone an upper-level smartphone. Look for an accelerometer, a proximity sensor and Samsung is probably going to throw in a form of screen input similar to Swype input.
Android 2.3 will be running the programs and menus of the Samsung Nexus S. This will be the first device to officially be released with the 2.3 version. It is called “Gingerbread” by Google, the maker of android. The new features it will have to include NFC ( Near Field Communication ).
This will allow the owner to tap or bump the Nexus S against a cash register or other smartphone and make or receive payments. Paypal is already prepared with the bump technology for their payment processor. Voice-over IP ( Internet Protocol ) may also be implemented into the 2.3 version, if cell carriers do not put up a fight.
Wi-Fi will be available on the Samsung Nexus S. The last Nexus model had Wi-Fi ability up to the “G” mode, but expect it up to the “N” mode on this handset. The “N” mode is five times faster than the “G” mode. T-Mobile is going to the carrier chosen for this handset and the T-Mobile AWS 3G bands will be used. AWS stands for “Advanced Wireless Service”. Other smartphone makers like Nokia also use these bands.
Expect at least a five megapixel camera or larger on the back of the Nexus S. Also expect a camera on the front. This smartphone is going to support video calling. The camera on the back has a flash and will feature at least geo tagging. Geo tagging can be turned off in the menus of the Nexus S for security.
The Web 2.0 conference was the place Google revealed that the android 2.3 system would be here “in a few weeks”. That means the Samsung Nexus S will also be here “in a few weeks”. Look for it to be released close to the date when Apple also releases their next iOS 4.2 update. No prices are yet announced.
