The latest release from Sony Ericsson is aimed to an audience that is crazy about high-end smartphones, but can’t afford most of them. It is supposed to offer an alternative for those who long for a nice looking device, which has a similar computing power as its richer brothers, without setting you back financially. From the very beginning, the aspect of the Xperia Neo will cause some people to raise their eyebrows, while fueling the critics. Being made of plastic and not even the best quality one, has a deterring effect on those who are very interested in how the smartphone looks like, and it takes a while to accommodate.

xperia-neoWhat’s inside is not impressive if you compare it with the iPhone 4 or the Galaxy S 2, but the fact is that the Xperia Neo is not competing with those two, so this comparison would not be necessary. The 1GHz Qualcomm CPU and the 512 of RAM are enough to run applications, videos and make gaming a pleasant experience, but the boot time is simply abysmal. It will take up to two minutes to boot, which is way too long even for patient people and another downside is that the keyboard is less than accurate, which is responsible for many typing errors.

In terms of software, it comes as no surprise that the Xperia Neo runs on Android 2.3 and Sony decided not to tweak it too much, except for some adjustments for better integration with the social networks. The 8 megapixels camera is very promising, but while the hardware is solid, the software leaves much to be desired and neither the images and videos are what you’d expect. Not necessarily bad, but definitely below what an 8 megapixels camera should deliver, the pictures are effected by the image processing.
